Updated: Mar 4, 2021

It is a myth that adults can't learn a second language. Moreover, in this article, I will bust this myth by giving you some ways/tips by which you, as an adult, can learn a second language.

When you are an adult, learning anything new became harder for you. Yes, that statement is true, but it is not impossible.

All you need to do is open your mind and have an eagerness to learn something new. So if you are thinking of learning a second language, then read this article till the end.

Analyze and Repeat Patterns

As an adult, you can easily learn the second language by analyzing the structure of the new language sentences and then repeating them. Furthermore, you don't need to cram the whole grammar book. You can speak a new language without even knowing grammar. Use grammar as a tool to answer your questions, but in the starting phase, don't worry about it much.

When you see someone speaking in the language, you are learning. Just repeat that thing and then try some different things but with the same structure.

Make Use of Apps

There are currently various applications present in the market that can help you learn a new language. These apps offer bite-size vocabulary and grammar lessons at your fingertips. Some of those applications are free, and some are paid.

The few most popular applications are:

  • Duolingo

  • Babbel

  • Busuu

Moreover, most of these apps will allow you to set your daily goals so you can track your progress.

Join Language Exchange Program

A language exchange program will pair you with another person where you both can teach each other your native language through conversations.

When you do a face to face conversation with the native speaker/your partner, your partner will help you to correct your errors, and you can also do the same if your partner is wrong.

If you start understanding the new language basics, you should definitely join the language exchange program. This program can take you from beginner to advance level.

Listen to Podcasts

When it comes to absorbing the new language in your mind, there is no better way than listening. You should listen to the podcasts of the language you are learning.

By doing this, you will get to know how the native people talk in their language very frequently and speedily. Moreover, while listening to the podcast, you will get to know about new words and how to pronounce them.

Set Goals and Track Your Progress

Setting up an achievable goal is necessary when you are learning something new. Your goal will help you to create a plan to achieve your target. However, just creating a goal is not enough; you also need to track your progress.

Do not set an unachievable goal because it will only demotivate you. Try to set a realistic goal for yourself. If you cannot achieve your target, then find out what things you need to change like your learning strategy or learning pattern.

Conclusion

If you are planning to learn a new language as an adult, then keep the above points in your mind. If you follow all the above things, then it will make your language learning journey smoother.
